Rare Japanese Takaosan Snake Bamboo Art

An interesting stained and incised bamboo object where a snake is holding a gold coin and comes from the shine at Mt. Takao, a noted shrine in Kyoto.

For centuries, white snakes were associated with the deity, Benzaiten and a regional shinto deity and was thought to bring good fortune and wealth.

The bamboo hanging object is painted/ stained and incised with the motif of snake set in the shrine forest holding a gold coin.

Age: 20th century.
