Japanese Paper Lacquered Box with Motif

A mid-size document or letter box to hold documents or paper used for writing letters. The box is made using thin strips of paper and weaving the paper into a box. A layer of paper is covered on both the inside and outside then lacquer is coated on the top. The inner layer is covered with paper again and the box is finished. These boxes were used daily in most Japanese homes to hold kimonos, cloths, and other small objects. However, recently fewer artists are creating the boxes and have gotten rarer. Age: Showa Era 1926-1989. Size: Height: 3" Width: 12" Length: 9"
