White Zogan Shippo Motif Incense Container

A simple yet contemporary white zogan style ceramic kogo with a motif known as shippo-mon by one of the noted ceramic artists in Japan, Yokoyama Choyo (1896-1977) Born in Tokyo, Choyo established his kiln in the city of Ichikawa. Together with his acquaintance, Itaya Hazan, Choyo co-established the Toto-kai. Choyo took great efforts to spread contemporary Japanese ceramic tea utensils.

The piece contains a box inscription by Kobori Sotsu, the 15th head of the Enshu-ryu branch of chanoyu or way of tea. Box was inscribed in 1970.
