The distinction between many of the hardwoods in Chinese antiques is difficult and continues to be debated among connoisseurs, scholars, and experts. The woods known as zitan, laosanzhi, and sanzhi have similar appearances and one could be confused with the other. Yet, all three have been highly sought after for their color and grain. The tray shown is possibly a sanzhi or hongmu wood tray. The sides and the rim on the edge of the tray are sculpted to create a repeating pattern. Tray is coming from a Japanese estate in the Osaka region. There is scratches from being used and accumulation of dust on the corners inside the tray. Age: 19th-early 20th century size: Length 38 Width 27.1 Height 3.3cm |
