Edo Period Osaka Estate Pair Scroll of Sages
Sold; Thank you.

Images of sages are a popular subject matter among the ruling samurai class to decorate in the alcoves and rooms of the residence. The pair of scroll is depicting two noted sages found in Daoism, Li Tieguai and the frog sage. The frog sage often carries a frog that provides magical wonders and is an auspicious figure for the home. Li Tieguai is known for his teachings on virtue and morality.

The work is very similar to the standard styles often seen in Kano school works. The piece may have been a panel work and was re-mounted into a hanging scroll format. Scroll comes with a crypotomeria box for storage.

The underside of the lid contains an inscription that the scroll was originally part of the estate of Watanabe Yoshitaro of Nishinari-gun, Kamata Mura (Present day Osaka City, Fukushima-ku or Chuo-ku). The previous owner may have been a wealthy merchant or business owner situated in the Western part of the city which was considered to be the main waterway entrance to the city.
