Large Japanese Wooden Bust of Zao Gongen

Although the precise deity is not known, judging from the way the face appears, the eyes, structure of the teeth, the image appears similar to the face of the deity, Zao Gongen who is the central deity at Kinpusenji in Yoshino, Nara. Also Zao Gongen is the wrathful form of the Cintamani Avalokitesvara.

The bust was produced in the 25th year of Showa (1950) by Uehara Mitsuhiko. Nothing is known who the artist was or where he was situated in Japan. However, it can be assumed that this sculpture may have been displayed in Nara, where many homes and stores have sculptures produced by local artists of the famous deities that are in their neighborhoods.
