Chiura Obata (1885-1975) might be considered to be one of the finest and major Japanese American artists of the 20th century. Especially in the San Francisco bay area. Obata was trained by the finest artists of the Meiji period, Terasaki Kogyo and Hashimoto Gaho, both known in the West for their works in Kano and Maruyama - Shijo schools which, in turn, is reflected in Obata's works.

Obata became famous for his series of prints and paintings of Yosemite done in 1927 and his fame increased through exhibitions done at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Obata, like Isamu Noguchi was interred at Topaz during World War 2. Yet, Obata continued to produce Japanese American art throughout his life.

The scroll is from a San Francisco Pacific Heights estate.
