Anagama Hidari-Uma (Horse character reversed) Tea Bowl

74th Asahi Yusai (1921-2004)

Size: Diameter 4.9" Height 3.25"

The Asahi kiln is situated in Uji, which is South of the ancient capital city, Kyoto. Since the 5th century the region were producing ceramics for the tombs of the emperors and clan rulers. Later, daily objects were produced and by the 16th century, the Asahi kiln was established creating objects preferred by Kobori Enshu.

The tea bowl contains a zhou dynasty bone oracle script of the character horse that is reversed. Traditionally, tea bowls with the reversed horse character were made when a new kiln is being fired. It is the wish of the potter for success and the kiln bring good fortune.

The work was made by the 74th Asahi Yusai.
