Maximianus was a close friend of the emperor Diocletian. Realizing that the Empire was too large for one man to rule, Diocletian named Maximianus co-emperor in 286 A.D. and gave him the western half of the Empire. This period of rule brought about some noteworthy events in ancient Roman history
