Yemeni Jambiya Dagger Horn Handle Furry Sheath
$550.00

This is a very unusual and beautiful Yemeni dagger. It measures 13" long and weighs nearly a pound. The sheath is embellished with hand worked filigreed silver set with a piece of coral. Also there are coins on both the front and back of the handle, where most jambiyas only have the brass coins on the front. This work is typical of the Jewish silversmiths of Sanaa. I'm pretty sure this was custom made for it's owner. When the handle is tapped on my teeth, it feels like horn. The lower part of the sheath is made with black and white fur, likely goat, rather than leather, which is extremely unusual. This was made approximately 1880-1920 for ceremonial dress use, so the blade is unsharpened and chromed, a few spots of chrome have flaked off, revealing the steel beneath. Please note, the last two photos were taken with flash, rather than natural light to better show the quality of the horn handle.
