Rare New Zealand Colonial Specimen Table

Measures: 50 cm w x 69cm h.

19th Century.

A fine example of craftsmanship is found in this table that still has it's original label intact on the base, by J H Jewell of Christchurch, New Zealand. Mr Jewell exhibited in The New Zealand International Exhibition Christchurch 1882, where he won a silver medal for his work. He also exhibited in The Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London in 1886 where he exhibited table tops and New Zealand fancy woods. This table top is made from various New Zealand timbers, the main being burr totara. He was know to make table tops as his specialty for the gentry that visited his shop at Hereford St Christchurch. As they were small, the tops were able to be packed in their luggage and taken back to England where the bases where made on arrival as would of been the case with this piece, as the base is made from English oak, the top being attached to it with a wood threaded screw.
