| This wonderful example of a Teponaztli was acquired in Solala, Guatemala in the early 90's. Purchased directly from the performer, and likely creator, shortly after a village ceremony; this piece carries a hand carved inscription reading: Grupo Zijax Santiago Atitlan 3/16/81. Hand made drumsticks, each of a slightly different composition than the other, were obviously made at the same time, intended for this particular drum. The tones created when the sticks are used on the different tongues are different, suggesting each has a side it 'belongs' to. Condition on this piece is a small issue. Brought from the moist Guatemalan air into the American Southwest, there was some reaction by the wood, leading to fissures in the bottom of the drum. These do not directly affect the integrity, or the tone, of the drum, and are not a real cosmetic problem, since they are out of view when the drum is set down. | ||
