An excellent canoe prow from the Middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, Early 20th century. It is 14" long and is carved from heavy hardwood in the form of a crocodile head, with the extensive scale-like decoration seen on many objects from the Yenchen/Korogo village area. It is nicely detailed, the eyes are inlaid cowry shells and the wood has a lovely darkened, aged and shiny patina. An exceptional example.
