Narino Birthing Bowl

An exceptional figural vessel from the Capuli cultural complex, Highland Narino region of Colombia, ca. 850 - 1500 AD. The figure is wrapped around the rim of this 8-1/2" long bowl and is elaborately adorned with negative resist decoration, done in black over red slip. Nice little detailed touches, such as miniscule nostrils and protruding feet show off the advanced artistic skills. This is a rare, cultural significant piece. It is clearly a "Birthing Bowl", a ceremonial receptacle into which the placenta was placed after birth. Rites of fertility and the birth of the offspring of socially important families, were causes for ceremonial events and great celebrations.
