An exceptional Calima alcarazza (Yotoco phase) from the Valle Del Cauca, Colombia, ca. 300 - 1300 AD. This rare, 5-1/4" high vessel combines phalliform, mammiform and phytomorphic elements to create a composite symbolism connoting fertility. The highly burnished red slip is decorated with wonderful black resist designs. An outstanding example of incredibly delicate workmanship. See Armand Labbe's "Colombia Before Columbus", pages 59 - 64, for a similar example and further information. |
