An exceptional Early Paracas bowl, ca. 650 BC, from Southern Peru, probably Chiquerillo. The vessel has a 6-1/2” diameter and is 3-1/4” high. It features the classic motif of the frontal feline mask, showing the late Chavinoid characteristics of the eyes and mouth, which exhibits overlapping fangs. This incised and painted feline is flanked by two panels, each consisting of geometric designs. Those are followed by two panels with serpent motifs, which have unfortunately lost most of their pigments, as they were applied without a matrix base. Most early Paracas pigments contained soluble dyes, which were often leached out by ground water, leaving only the whitish matrix. This vessel retains good pigmentation on the primary motif and flanking panels and overall is in fine condition. See Alan Sawyer’s “Ancient Peruvian Ceramics” (The Nathan Cumming Collection), page 75, for a vessel with similar iconography and further cultural background information. |
