Moche Temple Vessel
A fine Moche V temple vessel from Peru, ca. 550 – 700 AD. This rare architectural effigy is 7-1/4” high and depicts a temple seated atop a platform with an encircling walkway. A serpent with deer ears is wrapped around the building, with its head resting on the roof. The circular path surrounding the chamber is not only an accurate portrayal of such temple mounds, but also echoes the coiled serpent motif. Highly burnished surfaces set off the unburnished pathway. In excellent condition, with good mineral deposits and just a minor repair to the spout.
