A fine Throwing Club (i ula drisia) from Fiji, 17-1/2" long, late 19th century. The handle has nicely carved decorative designs, executed with great skill. This easily portable club was the everyday weapon in peaceful times. A man would carry as many as three of these thrust into his waistband. Although sometimes used as a bludgeon in combat, the throwing club was primarily hurled at an enemy to kill him outright or stun him, so that he could be slain with a heavy two-handed club or sword.
In excellent condition, with fine patina and signs uf usage. See Anne D'Alleva's "Art and Artifacts of Polynesia", page 16 for a similar example. |
