Moche Shaman

An important Moche Shaman, 9" high, wearing a full body robe and adorned with a puma headdress. He is holding a bowl in his right hand and a ceremonial object in his left. This particular object has been a point of much discussion in Peru's archaeological circles this year and is the subject of a paper by Luis Lumbrereras. Two intact mummies were recently excavated at the Huaco de la Luna, each having such an object as part of the burial goods, which also contained other shamanistic objects. They have shamanic uses, are made out of leather and/or resin coated textile/fiber materials and are very similar to such objects still being used by current day Peruvian brujos, who use it to ward off attacks from individuals possessing the power of the evil eye. A little pitting and the puma head is cleanly reattached, else in excellent condition. An rare and significant example.
