Nazca Erotic Vessel

This is a really large late Nazca figural vessel from Peru, ca. 500 - 700 AD. This globular vessel is 10" high, 24-1/2" around the middle and depicts a male with a large erection. The right arm is holding a begging bowl and he is wearing a large pectoral or quena (flute), which is also an erotic symbol and may indicate his status in Nazca society or represent a warning. The deeply excised open mouth shows just a tooth or two. Red dots indicate that the eyes are blood-shot. The face is further marred by painted freckles, probably indicating some kind of disease. He is at once disturbing and sadly touching. Painted overall in tan and brown, intact. A unique and powerful effigy with an intense presence.
