Moche III Sacred Mountain Vessel

A beautiful Moche III vessel from Peru, ca. 200 - 450 AD. It is 7-1/4" high and depicts the Sacred Mountains. This important Moche motif is always presented in the form of the San Pedro cactus, as shamans would go to the mountains to consume it. It is detailed in red over the highly burnished orange-cream slip and is in exceptional condition.

See "The Spirit of Ancient Peru", by Rafael Larco Herrera, page 118, for two similar examples.
