Cajamarca Tripod Plate

A fine Cajamarca tripod bowl from Peru, ca. 200 - 800 AD. This thin-walled beauty has a 5-3/8" diameter, is finished with the traditional cream kaolin slip and is decorated inside and out with characteristic designs incorporating the Vizcacha (chinchilla) motif. The interior is in excellent condition, the exterior is a little pitted, which is typical of the type.

The Cajamarca used kaolin in their ceramics and are the only culture in Peru which developed tripod designs into their ceramics, perhaps indicating Central American influences. This is an exceptional example, containing rattles.

This unique civilization developed unabated, from its earliest Huasi/Chavin phase a full Millennia before Christ, all the way to its Inca absorption into the "Tahuantisuyo". Even in defeat they were able to retain their polity intact. Cajamarca's main "Curaca" aligned himself with the Atahualpa faction against Cuzco, aiding in the final defeat of Huascar. It was in Cajamarca where Pizarro captured the Inca.
