Lambayeque Fighters

An exceptional Lambayeque vessel from Peru, ca. 700 - 1350 AD. It is 8-1/4" high and depicts two men engaged in some type of wrestling match or ritual battle. Each is holding a large ball or stone object in one hand and is pushing the opponent with the other. The scene depicted is of cultural significance, as it most likely portrays a ceremonial or ritual event, certainly not common combat. Painted overall with highly burnished tan slip, highlighted with chestnut brown stripes and accents on the figures. A functional whistle is built into the strap handle. A stress crack behind the figures was repaired, else in excellent condition.
