Nicoya Hunchback Effigy Figure

A rare hunchback effigy figure from the Nicoya region of Costa Rica, ca. 700 - 100 AD. This 3-1/2" tall, 4" wide effigy is a Papagayo Polychrome variety figure. While hunchbacks are common figural forms in West Mexican cultures, they are quite rare in the Nicoya region. This seated figure is also holding, or has emerging from it, a frog figure. The paint is abraded from the top of the head (ritualistic?), else is in excellent shape.
