A pair of 18th Century Piranesi Engravings, circa 1770
A pair of Italian Engravings of Roman Ruins by the Italian artist and designer Gionvanni Battista Piranesi(1720-1789) famous for his etchings of Rome and surrounding area as well as his designs of furniture and decorative arts. The engravings read directions by alphabetical letter to areas on the plate. They are engraved in the lower right corner "Piranesi Archit dif et inc". They are impressed with the mark "TOM III and TOM IV". Their impression size is 21 1/2" wide and 15 1/2" high. The heavy paper engravings themselves are larger. These came from a local architect who purchased these while he was traveling in Italy after the War. They are originals-not restikes. All are framed, probably in the 1950's and have signs of age i.e. "foxing", but otherwise are in very good condition with no tears and are good to excellent impressions. SOLD.
