| Most likely from Salem, or the North Shore of Massachusetts, this table is rather verbosely referred to as a square top table with elliptical and hollow-fronts, elliptical and hollow-ends, and ovolu corners. What results from this elaborate process in design is a sculptural masterpiece of proportions and perspective. Although the form of the table is quite obviously grounded in earlier, lighter and elegantly restrained variants of the Federal era, this table represents and assumes a newer and more vigorous interpretation of the Classical era that was emerging in all urban areas along the Eastern seaboard. Similar tables and case pieces with acanthus leaf decorations, with punchwork backgrounds are often associated with the cabinetshop of Samuel F. McIntire. Certainly, McIntire’s impeccable design signatures influenced many coastal Massachusetts workshops. Quite obviously, the extent of his work strongly impacts, if not totally dominates, the design of this particular table. The results of these carefully crafted design techniques produces an American masterpiece in wood. | ||
