A Scottish George III mahogany chest of drawers, 1785
A fine Scottish George III mahogany and inlaid swell-front or bowfront chest of drawers, with a central drawer urn and floral shaded inlay, circa 1785-1795. The bureau has a thumb-molded top and is comprised of three top drawers and three lower graduated drawers. The whole case sits of on bracket feet. Excellent color, outstanding patina, and finish. The back joinery features three veritcal tongue-and-grooved boards which secure two solid backboards which are champhered into these boards. The drawers are cockbeaded, and constructed with half-blind dovetails. The framed drawer system features a central vertical runner which passes through a two bottom board; a salient construction detail found on the best Scottish Neoclassical case pieces. All these precise and specialized characteristics are signs of a very skilled and sophisticated cabinetshop which practiced very workman-like construction and paid great attention to details. Great Britain, almost certainly Scottish. CONDITION: Excellent, with no repairs of note. A very handsome and well-made piece with full dust boards which is quite heavy due to the superior construction and dense Island mahogany. The locks are all original and are in working order. There is a minor patch on the central drawer where the key whole exists. The stamped fire-gilt brasses are original. PROVENANCE: A New Orleans, estate. MEASUREMENTS: Height: 37 1/2, Width: 45, Depth: (overall) 23 1/2.
