A Philadephia Federal mahogany library table circa 1810
A very fine Philadelphia Federal mahogany library table attributed to Henry Connelly (1770-1826)of Philadelphia, circa 1800-1820. This attribution is based on several documented examples that are all almost exactly alike. No other cabinetshop is known to have produced this particular form. All have been attributed to Connelly, a cabinetmaker with a spacious workshop at 72 and 74 South Fourth Street. Skilled in construction by sophisticated artisan, this table represents Philadelphia's suave adaptation of London's highest Regency fashion. Condition is excellent. The brass casters are both antique, but non-original. The finish and color are choice. A mate to this table may be found in "Federal Philadelphia-Athens of the Western World", B. Garvan, p. 52. which is displayed in the Philadelphia Museum Of Art.
