A southern Federal mahogany stand, circa 1810
A preciously rare and previously undocumented southeastern Virginia Neo-classical Federal mahogany candle-stand, circa 1795-1810. The present southern candle-stand is constructed of very dense figured mahogany and is quite heavy. The turnings on its mid-shaft are very refined and indicate an urban area of manufacture, most likely Norfolk, but are also reminiscent of some Baltimore examples. Less than six documented highly developed and fully-evolved southern candle-stands from the Neo-classical era are known to exist. The canted corners on the table’s top are a common New York City design motif during the American Federal era (1785-1820) which was adapted by the unknown southern cabinetshop which produced this table. The author is unaware of any other southern candle-stands of this model. CONDITION: Very modest and acceptable old restorations. There was a small shrinkage separation to the top, which has been professionally conserved and in now virtually invisible. No breaks to any of the three legs. One leg has been strengthened to the shaft by a small modern dowel; a maintenance restoration which has been expertly performed. The table retains its original eighteenth century brass latch and also has an old, deep, and rich finish with an organic application of amber shellac.
