A Wonderful Antique Victorian Chocolate Banded Agate Brooch Pin or Pendant Scottish, circa 1850. Queen Victoria popularized Scottish Agate jewelry when she became enamored with their natural beauty on her many excursions to Scotland. Victorians believed that natural stones, including agates, had protective and healing properties and thus incorporated them into many of their jewelry designs. This is an Antique Victorian Period, circa 1850's, Large Scottish Chocolate Banded Agate & Gold Filled Ornate Brooch that can also be worn as a pendant. The piece measures approximately 2 inches wide by about 1 1/2 inch wide, which is substantial for brooches of this era. The stone is a chocolate agate with natural banding formed in nature. The stone has a wonderful lustrous polish and is set in an ornate original Victorian antique Gogo filled twisted bezel with ornate textural detail. The brooch closes in the back with the original C clasp. There is a loop on the back and if one added a ring and chain, one could wear this as a pendant as well. This piece dates to the Victorian Era, circa 1850 and is in lovely vintage condition.
