| Queen Victoria popularized Scottish Agate jewelry when she became enchanted with their natural beauty on her many excursions to Scotland. Victorians believed that natural stones, including agates, had protective and healing properties and thus incorporated them into many of their jewelry designs. This is an Antique Victorian Period, circa 1860 to 1890's, Large Scottish Banded Agate & Rose Gold Filled Ornate Brooch. This piece is truly magnificent measuring approximately 1 ¾ inch wide by about 1 5/8 inch wide. The original 19th century agate stone is one of the most beautiful that I have seen with its vibrant reds to orange and transparent banded striations. The stone has a wonderful lustrous polish and is set in an ornate original Victorian Rose Gold filled twisted bezel with ornate textural detail. The brooch closes in the back with the original C clasp. The brooch is in beautiful overall condition. There is a tiny gap between the stone and the bezel on one side, most likely original and mentioned only for accuracy as I always do. A truly beautful find. | ||||||||
