Quirky “Budai”circa Mid Qing Dynasty, possibly much earlier. This is a high fired pottery molded piece. Stylistically this figure hasn’t changed much since the Song Dynasty so precise dating is difficult. This is an excavated piece and has a similar glaze to Jizhou but without the expected craquelure. Quite possibly this Shekwan piece emulating this. In excellent condition the spot on the nose there is no glaze where it as either been rubbed off or simply never took...

Wonderful Tang tomb guardian “Zhen Mushou” head. This has an exceptionally fierce countenance guaranteed to ward off any evil spirits. This originally came from a very large piece but unfortunately this was the only part that could be repaired and salvaged. This would have been part of mythical beast sitting on it’s haunches with hooves; occasionally wings and a human face and placed in a tomb. This piece is made from terra cotta with traces of original black and white pigment...

Exceptionally fine and rare proto celadon handled tripod, circa Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 CE), from a Southern Kiln. This piece has been in my possession for over twenty five years, the only other ceramic I have seen in this glaze and clay was exhibited in the Beijing Place Museum in the early 1990s. There is one minor glaze chip noted in enlargement #9, otherwise perfect condition and the glaze is vitrified and stable. D: 16.5cm/6.5in and H: 10.cm/4.1in and L: (w/handle) 22cm/8.6in...

Rare buff colored pottery statue covered in white pigment from the Han Dynasty depicting an archer, one firing crack at the bottom otherwise in perfect condition. This figure appears to be in civilian garb, so probably this represents someone doing archery as either a sport or ritual act. H: 14cm/5in. Good pair of Tang Dynasty gray clay bricks depicting “Atlas” type figures seated on lotus flowers. I was in Taxila once and saw similar figures which to my mind illustrate the Greco/Roman influence in Tang art. The lotus shows indicates an obvious Buddhist connection. Both pieces are painted with “stucco” in good condition with no damage. W: 14.5cm/5.8in and H: 17.7cm/7in each.

Lovely gray pottery head of a woman from the Han Dynasty, Sichuan province. Early funerary art from Sichuan is quite distinct from the Han from the Central Plains of Shaanxi. In general Han Sichuan images show more emotion in their expressions and are far less abstract. Prior to their assimilation during the Qin Dynasty, Sichuan was composed of ethnically and politically separate non Han cultures. In my opinion this can be easily seen temperament and style of their art...

Fine and eclectic half fish/half woman pottery figure from the Tang Dynasty- these are quite mysterious figures and rare. The only reference I can find on these quirky figures is in Oriental Art: Conrad Harris & Estelle Niles van Osselt~ Vol. L No. 4. which asks more questions then it answers, although it is commonly believed these are somehow related to Nuwa-Fuxi (Two human headed snake) images that figure prominently in Chinese creation myths...

Han Dynasty lead green glazed out house toilet. I imagine even in the afterlife you’ll still need one of these. This was part of a larger barnyard ensemble which would have consisted of a walled compound with a pig or two. In excellent condition, no damage other than where it was broken off the compound wall which you can’t see since it’s on the bottom anyway...

Rare Shekwan (Shiwan) pottery storage jar with amber sancai type glaze, circa Ming Dynasty 1368–1644 CE. This type of jar is generically referred to as a Martaban jar which was a port city in the old Pegu Kingdom in present day Myanmar. These were exported all over South East Asia, and although their origins are very diverse, i.e., Vietnam, Thailand as well as well as Chinese potter’s in Sarawak, this one is from Shekwan Kiln in Guangdong China...

Exceptionally rare, handled drinking vessel from the Liao (Khitan) people, circa 907 CE to 1279 CE. There are very few Liao pottery pieces in collections today so this piece would of interest to anyone specializing in this period. Please note last enlargement for reference of a similarly shaped gilt silver piece dating form this period. This particular type of jar shows a much closer affinity with Central Asian cultures than the Han...

Rare Qing Dynasty “brush shaper” with Ge type glaze and deep inset footrim. The shallow and rimless surface would allow the calligrapher or painter to shape the tip of their brush into a fine point for detailed work. Excellent condition. D: 14.5cm/5.7in and H: 2.5cm.
