Luscious raw silk double sided “lungsema” kira from the Tashigang area, Bhutan. The palette on this piece is subdued yet exuberant with 9 different kinds of auspicious symbols embroidered and over a 100 lines of color (I lost count). It is in excellent condtion with little sign of wear (these are usually frayed a bit on the edge that drags the ground). There is one stain which should clean out if sent to a dry cleaner. Best one I have had to date. L: 2.6m/102in and W: 1.4m/55in...

Fine and rare old rattan “tali” basket with a contracted mouth from the Idu Mishmi ethnic group of Arunachal Pradesh, India. In India they are primarily animist but in China where they are known as the Lhoba they have a strong spiritual affiliations with Tibetan Buddhism. Google “Bamboo and Cane Culture of Arunchal Pradesh” and you will get a good description of this regional craft...

Rare strand of “drum” shaped white glass beads from the Naga ethnic group Assam, India, strung on hand made hemp cord. These are old beads and will date them conservatively pre 1950, please note the two round shaped beads are Chinese “Peking” glass beads 19th century. A few have chips but 90% are in excellent condition. Total length 68cm/27in, please note these are all the same size (scale in enlargements is metric).

Fine and rare Naga basket with ceremonial tail; these were used for carrying sharpened “panji” sticks, which were stuck in the ground to impede an enemy’s progress. Perfect condition made from all naturally produced handmade materials. The basket is woven from bamboo strips, the fringe of the tail is made of hair from a horse’s mane, and the carrying belt is composed of a plant fiber rope and possibly pandanus/palm fiber...

Primitive carving of a woman, from Southern India- possibly Orissa- probably a Hindu or fertility goddess. Not much else I can say about this piece except I bought it on its artistic merit. About 40 or 50 years old, some damage on the left side of head, H: 17.5cm/6.9in.

Luscious all hand spun and woven with gold threads, panel from a vintage Varanasi, Indian wedding sari, circa 60 to 70 years old. I would describe the colors as pigeon blood ruby red with subtle gentian floral scrolls intermingled with the gold thread medallions, which I might add is made of genuine low karat gold metal. This is double backed on cotton and silk with a “raw” silk border and polyester end trims...

Absolutely fabulous ( I would only say this if I don’t care if it sells and am happy to keep it for my own collection ) old and rare Angami Naga, three paneled shawl with anthropomorphic cowry shell design, woven by the Meitei of the Manipur State of India and used as a trade/tribute cloth to the Nagas. The exact reason of why these blankets are given to the Naga is a bit obscure...

Well carved mask from Nepal. This is made from a heavy, densely grained hardwood (but stained a darker color); with an old Nepalese rupee set in the forehead and an animal hide goatee and toupee’. I really don’t know much about this piece other than it came from Nepal. It is very thoughtfully crafted, and not a massed produced tourist piece of chachke. There is one chip on the side, H: 23.5cm/9.2in and 15.5cm/6.1in.

Good Angami Naga men’s blanket (body wrap) from India with unusual brown natural color. It is stitched together in 4 panels. The red and black side bands are woven with a silk warp which is quite rare for one of these pieces. Authentic old Naga tribal textile circa 40 to 60 years old, with a few very small holes. The bottom is finished with silk tassels and green embroidery. L: 170cm/67in and W: 103cm/40.5in.
