Good Kayan Orang Ulu gawai rice festival ceremonial mask, circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. This mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. Used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest. H: 25cm/9.8in and W: 16cm/6.2in.

Collection of small bamboo containers from the Khmu (Khamu) ethnic minority in Northern Laos. These people are the original inhabitants of the region and predate the Lao and Thai peoples. They usually live in remote areas around Luang Prabang and practice simple agriculture, hunting and gathering as well as bartering goods with other neighboring minorities. These would date between 20 and 50 years...

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they, have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity or used by women to ward odd “evil men” and attract money. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in...

Lovely vintage wearable woman’s dress from the Tai Dam ethnic group Vietnam. Made from all hand woven cotton cloth the, colorful silk embroidered wide bordered hem is particularly nice. Stunning Zo/Tedem blanket from the Burmese Indian border region. This piece is all silk, which indicates it was used on ceremonial occasions or owned by a high status woman. Mantles of Merit by David and Barbara Fraser has a near identical piece, pg 89 images 148 a,b, and c but their piece is mostly cotton, dated 1930 to 1960 so I will date this one the same. The feel on this piece is incredibly soft and supple, really something that cannot be conveyed through photos...

Charming old small black and red lacquer vessel from Kenteng, Shan State, Burma. A very cute piece and genuinely old- circa 50 to 80 years. This piece is quite unusual in that it has six feet instead of the usual four. There is some surface craclature as to be expected from authentic old lacquer but no breakage in the body. D: 13.5cm/5.3in and H: 8.2cm/3.2in.

Unique signed old, men’s blanket from the Biboki region, West Timor. The writing is different from the center then it is from the ends so perhaps, this is a dedication or blessing rather than a signature.
