Lovely vintage wearable woman’s dress from the Tai Dam ethnic group Vietnam. Made from all hand woven cotton cloth the, colorful silk embroidered wide bordered hem is particularly nice. Good condition, with a couple of fading streaks at the waist panel, but as this part was never meant to be shown when worn I would consider this negligible. W: 136cm/54in and L: 97cm/38in.

Stunning Zo/Tedem blanket from the Burmese Indian border region. This piece is all silk, which indicates it was used on ceremonial occasions or owned by a high status woman. Mantles of Merit by David and Barbara Fraser has a near identical piece, pg 89 images 148 a,b, and c but their piece is mostly cotton, dated 1930 to 1960 so I will date this one the same. The feel on this piece is incredibly soft and supple, really something that cannot be conveyed through photos...

Charming old small black and red lacquer vessel from Kenteng, Shan State, Burma. A very cute piece and genuinely old- circa 50 to 80 years. This piece is quite unusual in that it has six feet instead of the usual four. There is some surface craclature as to be expected from authentic old lacquer but no breakage in the body. D: 13.5cm/5.3in and H: 8.2cm/3.2in.

Unique signed old, men’s blanket from the Biboki region, West Timor. The writing is different from the center then it is from the ends so perhaps, this is a dedication or blessing rather than a signature. W: 114cm/44.8in and L: 186cm/73in, except for the yellow and blue lines this is woven from all naturally dyed handspun thread. Dating circa 1950 to 1960.

Two Yao/Mien garments (one men’s vest and woman’s long sleeved jacket). These are made from all hand spun and woven indigo dyed cotton thread with original silver alloy buttons. Very wearable with black linings, please see enlargements for dimensions (please email if want more specific measurements). I found these in the Golden Triangle region of Thailand recently, and they were in pretty sad shape so I had them repaired and washed and they came out looking quite nice...

Elephants, tigers and snakes oh my! Very decorative hand woven cotton blanket from the Naga people in Burma. I bought this piece around 1997 up in Mae Sai along the Thai/Burmese border. This appears to be naturally dyed and the condition is excellent. W: 99cm/39in and L: 164cm/5.4ft

Colorful hand woven beaded shoulder cloth from the Batak people, Sumatra. This piece is quiet lively and complicated with gold treads, and large “Rasta” colored diamond patterned warp embroidered bands. Nice old small shoulder bag with fine silk cross stitch embroidery from the Akha hilltribe in Northern Thailand. This piece was purchased in Chiang Mai in the early 1980s and was an old piece at the time so a good estimate on the age would 50 to 60 years old. Please note this is not a patchwork tourist piece which is recognizable by different bits quilted together and having zippers etc...

Good Iban woman’s kain depicting tree of life with bamboo running the length of the bidang reaching above the forest canopy, circa 1950s. Aside from commercial warp thread on sides, it is composed of all natural dyes and handspun thread. There are the inevitable few pin holes and a few small tears on one side (this indicates where the skirt has been taken in to have a better fit on the waist). L: 188cm/46.5in and W: 51cm/20in

Magnificent all rattan hand woven Rawang “san phi” basket, from the remote Putao area in Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. This one is quite old circa 50- 80 years, in good condition (one repaired loop), still pliable and not brittle, with excellent natural patina. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Arts of Asia 2007: Vol 37, #3, by Michael Howard has a good article on Rawang crafts...

Fine and rare Minangkabau song bird trap. I bought this in the old Dutch hill station of Bukittinggi Sumatra, Indonesia in 1988 and it was old then, so a circa 60 years old is a reasonable attribution as far as age goes. The Minangkabau are a matrilineal ethnic group from West Sumatra and Malaysia i.e. the women inherit the property rather than the men and this group plays an important current role in Indonesian politics...

Nice old Thai sticky rice “lunch box” in Lanna or Issan style. This is about 30 or 40 tears old with typical double wall construction. There are areas that have been lovingly repaired with some nylon cord. To the purist this may be seen as a distraction but I see time and an ethic where nothing was ever wasted- this was a valued very personal object. Next to it I have placed a contemporary one...
