Good Kayan Orang Ulu gawai rice festival ceremonial mask, circa 40 years old, from Sarawak. I bought this piece in Kuching, Sarawak in 2003. This mask would be held by the teeth on a piece of rattan on the inside. Used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest. H: 25cm/9.8in and W: 16cm/6.2in.

Collection of small bamboo containers from the Khmu (Khamu) ethnic minority in Northern Laos. These people are the original inhabitants of the region and predate the Lao and Thai peoples. They usually live in remote areas around Luang Prabang and practice simple agriculture, hunting and gathering as well as bartering goods with other neighboring minorities. These would date between 20 and 50 years...

Good monkey khik carved from wood, contrary to how I see these often advertised they, have little to do with attracting women, but are worn by on the side by men for luck and prosperity or used by women to ward odd “evil men” and attract money. The symbolism goes way back to Hindu mythology where the Shiva lingam represents primordial creative energy and the Monkey God Hanuman embodies courage and devotion. L: 5cm/2in...

Two Yao/Mien garments (one men’s vest and woman’s long sleeved jacket). These are made from all hand spun and woven indigo dyed cotton thread with original silver alloy buttons. Very wearable with black linings, please see enlargements for dimensions (please email if want more specific measurements). I found these in the Golden Triangle region of Thailand recently, and they were in pretty sad shape so I had them repaired and washed and they came out looking quite nice...

Magnificent all rattan hand woven Rawang “san phi” basket, from the remote Putao area in Northern Burma near the Tibetan border. This one is quite old circa 50- 80 years, in good condition (one repaired loop), still pliable and not brittle, with excellent natural patina. The Rawang are a subgroup of the Kachin people and live in some of the last great wilderness forests left in Burma. Arts of Asia 2007: Vol 37, #3, by Michael Howard has a good article on Rawang crafts...

Nice old Thai sticky rice “lunch box” in Lanna or Issan style. This is about 30 or 40 tears old with typical double wall construction. There are areas that have been lovingly repaired with some nylon cord. To the purist this may be seen as a distraction but I see time and an ethic where nothing was ever wasted- this was a valued very personal object. Next to it I have placed a contemporary one...

Wonderful old “farmer’s lunchbox” from Northern Thailand, used for carrying sticky rice to the fields for hard day’s work. This is probably about 50 years old possibly more, with a classic double wall construction. The contracted rim at the mouth is quite unusual and it is the only time I have seen this. In excellent condition it is made from split bamboo with the original natural fiber cord. H: 20cm/8in and W: 20cm/8in.

Classic example of Papuan New Guinea art in the form of a mask made from mud, a turtle shell a few lyre bird feathers and ochre pigment. I acquired this in 1988 from a dealer who bought it along the Upper Sepik River and it was around 30 to 40 years old when he got it. There is some pigment loss and a crack in the mud on the side noted in enlargements. H: 22cm/18.5in and W;16.5/6.5

One of a kind quirky Thai pangolin amulet carved from bone with Khon script signifying this has some spiritual meaning. I have never seen one of these before- possibly used as knife in symbolic blood letting rituals where the shaman cuts out “evil” from his patient. Probably about 30 year old this is a lovely abstract interpretation of a Scaly Anteater. L: 13cm/5.2in.

Rare phallic charm from Lamphun Northern Thailand- serendipitously enough, where they have an annual sausage festival. Originally these were worn by men at the waist and were thought to protect the wearer from any harm to his penis and in a more general sense they also are believed to bring luck especially in terms of “wealth generating or protection”, so a woman might keep one in her cash box to increase cash flow or purse to prevent it being “snatched”...

As in the Chin ethnic group in Burma (not chin bones), eclectic strand of round wood, cylindrical bone and horse tooth beads. Some of the bone beads have “pumteked”, i.e. dyed to resemble old stone pumtek heirloom beads, possibly by a wax resist method. These were collected in the 1980s and had some age at the time so I will date around 1960. Total L: 71cm/28in.

Unusual “talking head” from the Yao (aka Mien) ethnic minority, Northern Thailand, this piece was not meant to be part of a complete body. As far as I know the Yao do not have a tradition of puppetry so I am guessing this was probably a toy carved to amuse the kids, never seen anything like this before. Very well carved with an expressive face...

Good and authentic Sarawak (Borneo) Kayan ethnic group spirit mask. This was used only twice a year for rice planting and harvesting festivals (gawai), these gatherings were usually a good excuse for a party and celebration to encourage the spirits to ensure a good harvest.
