Cultural Revolution Poster: "Warm Snowy Night"
Chinese poster of a painting printed at the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, originally painted 1974 by a well known Chinese artist: Lu Yifei (1931 to 2005) -studied under Wu Fan, Lu Yanshao, Pan Tianshou, Deng Bai, and Song Chung-yuan. Titled: "Warm Snowy Night", depicting a cozy winter setting in a Shanghai Department Store. There is great attention to detail- all the faces show different emotions, human interactions, and other minutia like the spittoon near the entrance, a ubiquitous boiling kettle of hot water as well as the skyline of the Bund in the distance outside the window. I taught English in Beijing and 1986 and the range of products sold in State owned shops had not changed much up to that time. This a lovely piece, not much of a political message here, other than showing a happy and prosperous people. Deng Xiao Peng was rehabilitated in 1973 made vice premier and the excesses of the Cultural Revolution were winding down, officially coming to close with the arrest of the Gang of Four in 1976. Quite possibly the reason they printed this painting in 1976 was to reflect a more cheerful and optimistic view of the future. The original work (to the best of my knowledge) hangs in a Chinese Museum of Art in Shanghai. Other works by this artist are in The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall and The Singapore Museum of Art. I have a few copies of these, all in the same excellent shape, the paper is a delicate but the posters are in very good condition, a couple have negligible tears in the margins but nothing a decent mounting won't hide. Free shipping in a mailing tube is included as part of purchase price- first come first serve. Please note all the enlargements (except for 1#) have been scanned to reproduce the best quality. L: 77cm/30.2in and H: 53cm/20.9in.
