Unusual mask from a Yunnan ethnic minority, possibly Qiang, Hani or Naxi. This piece is quite unique as it is carved from the end culm of a bamboo shoot, a material which I have never seen before for this sort of thing. Nuo rituals amongst the ethnic groups from this region are of an animist and shamanistic nature, I can’t add much more to it than that since the significance is usually specific to a particular shaman or village. This piece is circa 20 - 30 years old and is an authentic ritual mask; there is one minor crack on the jaw aside from that very good condition. H: 14cm/5.5in and W: 10.3cm/4in.
