Fine and rare five paneled skirt, from the Meifu subgroup of the Li people Hainan Island, circa mid 20th century. This kind of ikat textile is unique among Chinese minority groups. The top panel on this appears to be recent as it is composed of brighter colored commercial cotton thread, bear in mind that hand weaving commercial thread is more difficult than handspun given that its is finer. The rest of the skirt (circa 1950/1960) is hand spun cotton and indigo with abstract human and animal designs. Superb condition with no holes or frays. L: 102cm/ 40in and H: 59cm/23in (stitched together) x 2 for total size. Reference Traditional Brocade of the Li Ethnic Group: Fu Guihau.
