| Exceptionally large and finely preserved (pity its broken- viewable in enlargements) 9 band etched carnelian bead from the Pyu culture circa 300 CE to 700 CE. Describing this as a “military” bead is fairly apocryphal but seems to be the widely accepted term in bead collecting circles, and are said to indicate some sort of rank. I have two published references on these beads- Early Landscapes of Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Arts of Asia-Eyes on the Past: Samon and Pyu Beads in Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Terence Tam, vol. 38, #1, which make no mention of this. Interestingly enough, the chemicals used in making these were an alchemy process with corresponding astrological links. Provenance - Bucklee Bell bead expert/author and former contributor to the Peter Francis Bead Research Project. Scale noted in last enlargement. | ||||||||
