| Fine and rare Naga basket with ceremonial tail; these were used for carrying sharpened “panji” sticks, which were stuck in the ground to impede an enemy’s progress. Perfect condition made from all naturally produced handmade materials. The basket is woven from bamboo strips, the fringe of the tail is made of hair from a horse’s mane, and the carrying belt is composed of a plant fiber rope and possibly pandanus/palm fiber. It’s difficult to date this piece as it has a nice aged patina but no wear, and is done a 100% in the traditional fashion, so probably not older than 20 or 30 years old. Dimensions~ basket L: 30cm/12in, horse hair fringe L: 40cm/16in and strap L: 50cm/20in = 120cm/47in total length.
