| Post Mandalay “Jambupati” (in royal attire) lacquered Buddha from the Shan State Burma. From an Iconographical point of view this piece is quite rare- seated on a lotus base, supported by three elephants flanked by two horses, having a “wheel of law” mudra and flask in his lap. This is carved from a hardwood with no damage. At some point I am assuming this piece had ivory tusks and unisha finial as there are holes where they would have been. This point should be made, the term Shan is a generic term given to the Tai Yai people by others and they do not refer to themselves as this. In Thailand and the Shan State, Burma they refer to themselves as Tai Yai and in China Daizu. This piece is mid 20th CE. H: 18cm/7in and W: 8cm/3.1in. | ||||||||||||
