| Fine and rare circa 11-12th CE, impressed terra cotta votive plaque Mon Buddha. It should be noted that this was the first culture in Southeast Asia to embrace Theravada Buddhism, from Sri Lanka. Referred to as the Dvaravati in Thailand, they were a widespread and culturally significant group who influenced the Pagan, Khmer and Thai civilizations. The Mons persisted as a distinct ethnic group into the 19th century. Currently there are some living in refugee camps along the Thai/Burma border, but by and large have been assimilated into other cultures. The creased robe on this piece shows a distinct Sinhalese influence. Excellent condition- H: 9.5cm/3.8in and W: 5.5cm/2.2in. References; Ancient Art of Burma- Tasei Gallery and The Mons: A Civilization of Southeast Asia_ Emmanuel Guillon. | ||||||||
