Shan Ancestor Figure
Antique carved wood ancestor figure from the Shan States, Burma early 20th century. As with many Tai ethnic groups the Shan practiced “ancestor veneration” that represented a pre Buddhist spiritual tradition. This carving was possibly used in Mor Du ceremonies which is a kind of Thai voodoo. These practices though under reported/studied in the West permeate all levels of Shan and Thai society. This piece has traces of red lacquer and is well worn. Please note enlargements for condition as there is old damage to the base as well as some checks in the wood. H: 10cm/3.9in.
