Fine and rare pair of molded leather tobacco boxes from the Bai ethnic group in Yunnan, China. These are covered in black lacquer showing quite sophisticated craftsmanship on par with the Dai/Shan peolple who are acknowledged to be the best in this region, and date circa mid 20th century. These were purchased in a rural Yunnan Bai market, near Dali several years ago. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from which lacquer was made. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. There is some minor losses to the surfaces (please examine enlargements). W: 9.8cm/4.9in x H:5.5cm/2.2in & 8cm/3.1in x 6cm/2.4in.
