Burmese Military Bead
Good twelve striped etched carnelian bead from the Pyu culture circa 300 CE to 700 CE. Describing this as a “military” bead is fairly apocryphal but seems to be the widely accepted term in bead collecting circles, and are said to indicate some sort of rank. This type of bead is well documented, Early Landscapes of Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Arts of Asia-Eyes on the Past and Samon and Pyu Beads in Myanmar: Elizabeth Moore and Terence Tam, vol. 38, #1, which suggests enough, the chemicals used in making these were an alchemy process with corresponding astrological links. Similar beads of this type have been excavated in Dian Culture sites in Yunnan as well which date to 250 BCE. Scale may be viewed in last enlargement.
