Men’s tunic from the Chin ethnic group, most likely from the Hakha Township, Chin State. I purchased this in the 1990s and it is not very old- probably made in the 80s or 70s. This is an authentic ceremonial piece worn only on special occasions; I have listed this mainly for comparison to an antique piece I previously listed. I have not seen any more of these during the past 10 years of my usual buying trips, although I assume they are still being made locally in Myanmar. This weaving is a vanishing craft and probably in another 10 or 20 years it will no longer be done. The embroidery is single side floating weft while the blanket warp threads appear to be made of alternating handspun indigo and commercial black threads. Perfect condition, L: 195cm/76.8in and W: 113cm/44.5in. Note last enlargement with Chin man wearing a similar piece taken in 1902- 1908.
