Rare early 20th century Bai minority lacquered box constructed from leather. I purchased this piece in a Bai minority, weekly market in Yunnan near Dali around 2002. I have found many references to Bai lacquer but never any pictures or other documentation other than they grow the tree from which lacquer was made. One can assume this craft is no longer being done with the availability of cheap plastic items as well as the migration of artisans to better paying jobs in the city. Excellent condition. H: 5cm/2in and D: 11cm/4.2in. Please view item #2468 on my website for a later pair of Bai lacquer boxes.
