| Fine and old Burmese lacquer betel box with black, red and green pan-bwa motif and “dancing monkey” figures. From personal experience (I have been traveling to Burma and it’s lacquer workshops since 1986), I can say all genuinely old Burmese lacquer items will show signs of ware such as cracks on the lacquer surface and chipping along the edged rims, as they were used on a daily basis in everyday life, pristine old lacquer pieces with no signs of use are as rare as, authentic Rembrandts. Having said this the modern Burmese lacquer making craft is continually evolving and improving, real lacquer masterpieces are still produced today. This one is over fifty years old. There is a discreet and old repair to the base of the container which may be noticed as a slightly darker red lacquer application which obscures the lighter concentric outer rings at the bottom and where the inner cylinder attaches to the base. Both the original trays accompany this piece, which is a rarity in itself. 16.5cm/6.5in height and 19cm/7.5in diameter. | ||||||||||
