Antique Kenyah mandau handle

Exceptionally fine and rare Kenyah parang handle, from the Orang Ulu, Sarawak, circa 19th CE. Orang Ulu is more of a geographic designation rather than an ethnic group, referring to an upriver dweller (inland tribe). The “dragon dog” motif, which, may be viewed in enlargement #6, is specific to the Kenyahs. This piece really is “museum quality”, in that it is better than the ones I saw in Ethnographic exhibition at The Kuching Museum, Sarawak. Superb naturally worn patina with fascinating and elaborate of carvings of masks, “tree of life scrolls”, and “aso” dragon dog, made from the base of a sambar deer antler. Excellent condition, H: 13.8cm/5i and W: 8.5cm/3.4in.
