| Very rare late 19th- to early 20th CE storage basket from the Bidayuh people of Sarawak. For basket collectors this is a real “classic”. The lid is made from the skin of a sambar deer while the basket plaiting is all rattan with some bamboo slats on one side as a cushion; also the basket is lined inside with peeled wood. There are a few very minor repairs and holes here and there but overall I would consider this piece in very good condition given its age and environment. The lid is a bit of a tight fit but the materials are the same in appearance and age, possibly this lid is from another basket or just as possible the hide was not completely ”cured” when being stretched over the lid frame, so it contracted. H: 57cm/22.5in and top D: 31cm/12.2in. | |||||||||||
